Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Concussion Syndrome - Dr Nasiek's Seminar in New Jersey

Once again, Dr. Nasiek presented on topics related to TBI indicating the silent TBI epidemic, the difficulty of diagnosis, the seriousness of consequences, permanency of the injury, and new methods of diagnosis using EEG and Tele EEG. Because TBI is a serious and permanent injury to the brain, it is difficult both to diagnose and to prove. TBI may lead to the formation of brain scarring and other serious pathology, however detection of either is difficult. With the golden standard of detection normally being brain biopsy, this pathology is too aggressive to have the place in the routine evaluation. Even an EEG may miss 90% of the seizure generating scar tissue unless performed over a long duration during sleep.

Thankfully, the new TELE EEG technology has been developed and can be performed over the prolonged period of more than 3 days. It is the most sensitive tool so far to proof focal seizure activity as the results of TBI. Although medical benefits regarding any brain and spinal cord injury in the state on NJ remain at the level of $250k, even a $15k policy will allow for such diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in the treatments of such injuries.

After his presentation, Dr Nasiek introduced his associate Dr Tikoo, Board Certified Neurologist, who gave a broad review of the pathology of the brain following the traumatic injury as a result of injuries caused by external forces. Dr. Tikoo indicated that TBI can result in a myriad of issues, including seizures. Although late onset seizures are more likely to recur and result in post-traumatic epilepsy, Tele EEG can be used to diagnose post-traumatic epilepsy by showing whether the events are epileptic, the type of epilepsy, and the focal point of the seizures.

Next, Dr. Yaldar Taher presented on the technical aspect of TELE EEG. He indicted how this advanced technology has evolved over the years and is now patient friendly, allowing users to participate in almost all daily activities. Dr Tahar answered multiple question following his presentation.

The final presentation was by Wajdi Ahawa, Tele EEG technician, who demonstrated further technical aspects of providing home Tele EEG to patients. This is a new and promising way of diagnosing TBI complications and helping patients in need of post-TBI care.

After these presentations, Dr Nasiek and Melissa Spethman, marketing and events coordinator, have raffled two gift certificates for 1 hour massages while many more stayed long after the program to talk and exchange information. The program was very well received as per multiple thank you notes that the organization has received following the program.

While many more people were in attendance this week, the meeting was still held according to the most recent safety guidelines put out by New Jersey Department of Health and was organized with safety as its highest priority. As usual, great food and even better conversation was exchanged, while the spread of new knowledge occurred. The next meeting is expected to be held on April 7th, from 7-9 PM at the same place (Wednesday).
