Polish Artist in New York Exhibition
October 31, 2006
Paul Skurski uses the ancient technique of painting with egg tempera, one of the oldest existing painting mediums, to create ironic and realistic views of the materialistic society around him.
Skurski’s canvases have the slickness of old-style magazine covers, but his pop-realism images are not at all superficial. His overly beautiful subjects are frozen in moments of personal gratification—or, as Skurski calls them, “Well-Groomed Desires.” The men and women of the artist’s smoothly sardonic visions love their cars, gadgets, and selves. They also love to pose and posture—as if they were constantly aware of being observed. He loves to paint dancers, both tired older dancers, and skittering, young dance students, and he paints them lovingly. He captures both their motion and the emotion behind it. Skurski was born in Poland and is a graduate of Warsaw’ Art Academy.
