The 600th Anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald
July 15, 2010
Today is the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, (the Battle of Tannenberg if you're German), in which Poland and Lithuania defeated the Teutonic Knights that had raided Eastern Europe for centuries.
This was the largest battle in Medieval Europe and led to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which introduced elections for Kings and "golden freedoms" to the region.
At 5 pm today, the Polish Army Veterans Association will place a wreath at the statue of Wladyslaw Jagiello in Central Park at 79th Street, on the East Side of Turtle Pond.
