Feliks Brudek Paintings - Greenpoint

February 24, 2010

Feliks Brudek is a Polish painter, a former soldier in the Polish Army, long-time resident of Greenpoint. This is how a friend of his, an illustrator Beata Szpura, describes Mr. Brudek:

“Feliks is a close friend I’ve known for almost thirty years. He was a soldier in the Polish Army when the WWII broke out. He fought the Germans. His division had to surrender; and he sneaked out of Poland and went to Romania, France, Norway, and Britain. He joined the Polish Army that formed in Western Europe. After the war he did not want to go back to Communist Poland, he stayed in Britainand in the early fifties he came to the US. He is an artist-painter by calling, even though he never went to art school. He made a living by painting people’s apartments and cutting grass at the Queens cemetery.

Now he is 95 years old and lives in a nursing home. He has not been painting for a while because of poor eyesight. He talks a lot of the WWII, about German bombings and horrible atrocities he had witnessed. He escaped death many times, befriended starving German opera singer in Allies-occupied Schleswig-Holstein and fed her, secretly, his soldier’s food rations; in the bombed village he saved babies, whose mothers were nowhere to be found, by throwing them into freshly ripped craters in the earth while bombs were still falling (“It is unlikely that the bomb will hit exactly the same spot twice”, so he thought).
He has no family; traumatized by the war he remained single all his life.

I am someone he trusts and I cherish it. I try to take him out of the nursing home at least once a week; he enjoys relative normalcy of my life. He loves listening to operatic arias, since he used to be a tenor in “Echo” choir.”
