Polish American Congress to Honor Catholic League's Bill Donohue

October 22, 2008

The Downstate N.Y. Division of the Polish American Congress has chosen Dr. William A. Donohue, president and CEO of the Catholic League For Religious and Civil Rights, as one of its four distinguished honorees for 2008.

Dr. Donohue’s accomplishments defending the Catholic Church and the ideals it represents will be noted at the 2008 Awards Banquet of the Congress at the Polonaise Terrace in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Sunday, October 26th.

Also honored with him will be Rev. Janusz Lipski, associate pastor of St. Hedwig’s Church in Floral Park and Bogdan Chmielewski, president and CEO of the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union.

In addition to individuals like them, the Polish American Congress also selects one of its member organizations for special recognition. This year it is the Polish Singers Alliance of America, District Seven, the oldest Polish cultural organization in North America.

Dr. Donohue has appeared on thousands of TV and radio shows speaking on civil liberties and social issues. He was also voted one of the top 100 Catholics of the 20th century by the Daily Catholic.

On several occasions, the Catholic League supported the Polish American Congress in refuting false accusations against Polish Catholics.

Father Lipski came to the United States in 1998.  He served eight years at St. Hyacinth’s Church in Glen Head before coming to St. Hedwig’s. He is chaplain of the newly formed Long Island Chapter of the Congress.

As president and CEO of the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union, Mr. Chmielewski heads the largest U.S. ethnic credit union with $1.2 billion in assets and 70, 000 members.

The Polish Singers Alliance, District Seven was established in 1889 and maintains and promotes Polish culture through song. Its member choruses are located in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The Polonaise Terrace is located at 150 Greenpoint Avenue and will begin the banquet at 4:00 p.m.  For information call (718) 383-3700.
