Pierogi-Lovers Wanted for Polish-American Heritage Day Festival

In preparation for its seventh annual Polish Day on Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 10:30 AM – 8 PM at St. Luke Church & Hall on South Avenue in Boardman, organizers are inviting the public to help make some of the coolest parts of the event happen!

Youngstown’s 2nd Annual Best Pierogi Contest
Join us to Celebrate Youngstown’s Passion for Pierogi! To do so we are looking for the best pinchers in town to show us their stuff. The contest is open to all amateur cooks and businesses. The contest is held on Sunday at 2 PM. Get an entry form online or by request at email info@polishyoungstown.org or call (330)333-9724.

Applicants will be judged in one of four categories:

  • Homemade Traditional – boiled or fried pierogi filled with cheese, cheese/potato or kapusta (pickled or fresh cabbage) with or without mushrooms, carrots, etc.
  • Homemade Non-Traditional – open to entrant’s creativity, keeping in mind that a pirog is a stuffed pocket of dough.
  • Commercial – open to any business using a traditional recipe, and;
  • Dessert – pierogi made as a dessert open to entrant’s creativity

Judges will determine the winners in each category will walk away with prizes, pride and the title of Youngstown's Best Pierogi Maker!

Pierogi-Eating Contest
Think you love pierogi more than anyone else? Prove it! The annual pierogi-eating contest is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. The goal is to see how many delicious, buttered dumplings you can eat in three minutes. There is an entry fee of $10 with each contestant receiving a pierogi T-shirt. First-, second-, and third-place prizes will be awarded. The pierogi-eating contest is held on Sunday at 6 pm. Get an entry form online or at the Ticket Booth any time before then.
