Uczta Meksikana - Polish Happy Hour at Fiesta Tapitia

March 05, 2012

At first glance the cultures of warm, dry Mexico and chilly, wet Poland do not have that much in common.

However, if you have ever spent time with members of either cultural group, you will see the important things are the same: close families, good food, yearning for satisfying work that can support the family, education for kids, and then a little drink and a little dance squeezed in between.

Records show that when Poland established its freedom, Mexico was fighting for hers. While Mexico achieved its success, Poland was eliminated from the map. As a result of these shared struggles, the two nations grew in respect and established strong allied bonds.

So when war broke out in Europe, the Mexican people wanted to help. More than 11,300 Poles emigrated to Mexico between 1900 and 1950, most were Ashkenazi Jews. Additionally settlements were established to assist with temporary residents too.  Once such important refugee camp was at Hacienda Santa Rosa in Leon near Guanajuato. Today there is a small Polish diaspora in Mexico, less than 1000 Polish citizens. However, there may be as many as 15,000 descendants of those Jewish and other war-torn refugees who were welcomed still living in Mexico today.

Additionally, the Mexican styles of music called Norteña and Ranchero are accordion laden and influenced by European settlers in our Southwest and Mexico's northern states.

For these reasons (and because it will be fun) PolishYoungstown is hosting:
