Polish Easter Bread making class
February 27, 2012
PolishYoungstown is excited to announce the latest offering in its’ cooking education program: Paska bread baking lessons.
Paska is a yeast, sweet bread typically served at Easter time. It is usually made from flour, sugar, butter and eggs. It is made with a few basic ingredients, but can also contain dried fruit, such as raisins or cherries. The dough is often put into a special round pan to give it height or the dough is braided together or decorated on top with a special shape. The loaf can also be glazed with a cheese spread, frosting or powdered sugar glaze, and might also be garnished with sprinkles.
This class will be taught by local award-winning, artisan bread specialist Tad Siemba who learned to make these tasty holiday staple from his relatives and from a bounty of trial and error research. We promise this is not a sit and watch class. Students should bring their aprons and loaf pans so they can get their hands in the dough. Each participant in the class will be taking home not just a recipe, but also tips for success and at least one freshly baked loaf.

KNOW THE TERMS AND THE DIFFERENCE…
Although all of these terms are Eastern European and are often used interchangeably to refer to the bread that appears right around Easter time, there is actually an official difference.
Paska is a light, eggy, sweet bread, sometimes flavored with lemon and often laced with dried fruit.
Babka is a heavier bread with a filling -- sometimes chocolate. Do you remember it from that Seinfeld episode? It also means grandmother.
Pashka is a Russian cheese dessert made in a mold like a flower pot.
