NY: Film Screening & Discussion: Karski & The Lords of Humanity
April 08, 2017
Please join the East Central European Center and the Harriman Institute for a screening of Karski & The Lords of Humanity, a partially animated documentary about a member of the Polish underground during World War II. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with producer and director Sławomir Grünberg.
Karski & The Lords of Humanity is a partially animated documentary which tells the story of Jan Karski, a member of the Polish underground who acted as a courier during World War II and whose most prominent mission was to inform the Allied powers of Nazi crimes against the Jews of Europe in an effort to prevent the Holocaust. Jan Karski infiltrated the Warsaw Ghetto and a Nazi transit camp and carried his dreadful eye-witness report of the atrocities to Britain and the United States, hoping that it would shake the conscience of the powerful leaders or—as he would later call them—the Lords of Humanity. In 2012 Jan Karski was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
The film's awards include: The Lavr Award 2016 - the Russian documentary "Oscar", Grand Prix at International Historical Film Festival, Warsaw, The Eagles Awards nomination - Polish documentary “Oscar” and Best Polish documentary at "Jewish Motives" International Film Festival in Warsaw.
After the film, we invite to a panel discussion with the director of the film, Sławomir Grünberg, featuring Professor Christopher Caes (Slavic Department, Columbia University), Professor Alan Timberlake (director of East Central European Center, CU) and Małgorzata Mazurek (professor of Polish Studies, Columbia University)
