Maciej Obara with his International Quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center in NY

May 24, 2015

Obara International Quartet is presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center in partnership with Jazztopad Festival and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.

Obara was nothing short of a revelation; an altoiost unafraid to try anything, but constantly listening to the music around him in order to find that shared understanding.
- John Kelman, All About Jazz

Polish saxophonist and composer Maciej Obara burst onto the international jazz scene after winning the Bielska Zadymka Jazz Contest in 2006 for Message from Oyaho. In 2011, he was nominated for the Fryderyk Jazz Musician of the Year Award. His International Quartet features fellow Pole, eminent pianist Dominik Wania, plus two of Norway's most in-demand jazz musicians, Ole Morten Vagan and Gard Nilssen. The group, offers a frenetic energy and a bold, harmonically dense sound. Their material ranges from slow and sentimental to almost aggressively busy, held together in either case by highly reactive and technically capable musicians.

Their New York concert, as part of the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center programing, closes their Canada and USA 2015 tour with performances at the Rochester Jazz Festival on June 25th, Ottawa Jazz Festival on June 26th, Edmonton Jazz Festival on June 27th, and Vancouver Jazz Fest on June 28th.
