Polish Students Demonstrate Great Success in Global Education

May 16, 2015

Once again polish students among world’s best in OECD ranking

The latest OECD survey has ranked Poland’s lower secondary school students fifth in Europe and eleventh in the world in terms of their mathematics and science competencies. Covering 76 countries, the ranking has for the first time also looked at the performance of African and South American children.
Full results will be announced at the World Education Forum, which will be hosted by South Korea between 19 and 22 May.

It is another Polish success in this global educational review. The previous edition of PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) put students from Poland (along with those from the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland) first in the EU and fourteenth worldwide.

Singapore came first this time round, followed by Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The best European performer was Finland, which took the sixth place overall.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has been examining global educational levels since 2000. The ranking to be published this year includes more countries, and looks at the way 15-year-olds from across the world use their knowledge of mathematics and science. The assessment areas are problem solving, analytical skills, argumentation, and interpretation. The ranking is based on the PISA survey, but also takes into account similar global studies: TIMMS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and TERCE (Tercer Estudio Regional Comparativo y Explicativo assessing Latin American countries).

The principal authors of the OECD compilation are Eric Hansushek of Stanford University, and Ludger Woessmann of the University of Munich
