"Inside Out. Polish Graphic Design and Illustration in the Making" in New York
May 10, 2015
This exhibition will feature the best of what Polish graphic design and illustration has to offer.
The exhibition, curated by Agata Szydłowska, will differ from other graphic design exhibitions: it will not focus only on the end product – the poster, the book, the dress, the magazine, but on the creative process – the true hand craft. The exhibition will flip the designs inside out and show how they are made!
The exhibition will be consist of three parts:
Handmade will present designs that were originally drawn, cut out, technique, collage, etc., and later reproduced in the form of a poster, or a book cover.
Hand-produced will show works manufactured using craft techniques such as silkscreen printing or bookbinding techniques.
Hand-thought will be dedicated to the creative process – sketching, drawing, cutting, gluing, and creating paper prototypes.
During WantedDesign, Culture.pl will also debut its newest publication “VeryGraphic. Polish Designers of the 20th Century”. Edited by Jacek Mrowczyk, graphic design expert and lecturer at the Rhode Island School of Design, “VeryGraphic” is the first extensive book about contemporary Polish graphic design. Together with “Out of the Ordinary”, a previous publication from Culture.pl focusing on product design, these two volumes comprise the first comprehensive history of Polish design. Editor Jacek Mrowczyk, exhibition curator Agata Szydłowska and renowned graphic design expert Krzysztof Lenk will participate in a panel discussion on the topic, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 17th from 10:30-11:30am.
The panel will be moderated by Ellen Lupton of Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.
