February 17, 2015
Friday, March 20, 2015 - Sunday, March 22, 2015 in Chicago and Evaston
Polish Cultural Treasures
Pre-concert lectures start one hour before each performance. Click HERE for a video preview
The Newberry Consort will present its second installment of rare and beautiful early music from Poland. The ensemble will travel from the Renaissance world of Copernicus into the Baroque with the ensemble of instrumentalists and singers, co-directed by multi-instrumentalist, specialist in medieval and Renaissance music, and second-generation Polish-American Tom Zajac.
After the success of their first concert featuring music from Poland's Golden Age Gaude, mater Polonia, the ensemble digs deeper and presents a more expansive cross-section of early Polish music dating back to the early 15th century through the early 17th century. The program will include foot-stomping Polish dances, exotic medieval melodies, folk tunes, and choral repertory from Poland's rich culture.
Featured musicians include soprano Ellen Hargis, David Douglass on violin, Shira Kammen, Mark Rimple, Tom Zajac (Renaissance winds and strings), Matthew Dean, Eric Miranda, Laura Pinto, Angela Young Smucker, and Corey Shotwell, voices.
Audience members are encouraged to take advantage of the insightful pre-concert lectures, offering an intimate look into the history and context of the featured composers and their works.
