At the occasion of Witold Lutoslawski’s centenary, UWPSEC presents an evening celebrating life and music of the great Polish composer, one of the pre-eminent European artists of the 20th century. The event will begin with an introduction by Prof. Huck Hodge from the UW School of Music, followed by a documentary made recently by two international experts on Lutoslawski’s music, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Steven Stucky, who took a trip to Poland to explore some aspects of artist’s life. After the film, an absorbing and rich Partita for Violin and Piano will be performed by the School of Music students, Allion Abraham Salvador and Josh Archibald-Seiffer. Finely, two acclaimed pianists, Dr. Ivona Kaminska and Dr. Christopher Bowlby, will perform a perennial favorite - Witold Lutoslawski’s Variations on a Theme by Paganini for Two Pianos.
This lecture is a part of the Distinguished Speakers Series UW PSEC’s MISSION: Bridging Cultures through Education about Poland by sharing Polish intellectual, scientific, and artistic accomplishments.
ABOUT UW PSEC: UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee was formed in 2004 by a group of the UW alumni, faculty, staff, students, and members of Seattle’s Polish-American community with a vision to create a leading West Coast Polish studies center at the University of Washington. In pursuit of this goal, an Endowment Fund sponsors a Distinguished Speakers Series, provides student scholarships, attracts visiting scholars to the UW, and builds partnerships with community organizations in the Pacific Northwest.
DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS SERIES was made possible by a generous donation from Andrzej and Izabella Turski; and by the continuous financial support from other donors. Each year, UW PSEC brings a number of experts on a variety of topics related to Polish culture, art, literature, economy, and politics to the UW campus.
