Krzysztof Wyszkowski is the co-founder with Andrzej Gwiazda of the WZZ [Free Trade Union of the Coast], the cradle of Solidarity, on April 29, 1978. Shortly after the solidarity hunger strike, with Blazej Wyszkowski’s courageous prison hunger strike, Anna Walentynowicz and Lech Walesa among others, joined the WZZ. Wyszkowski printed the slogan Solidarity on the 1980 Strike Bulletin of the Gdansk Shipyard, giving the union its name that was popularized throughout the country. During the victorious Big Strike in August 1980, WZZ members dominated the strike committee of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk. They declared the Solidarity Strike that was quickly joined by more than a million workers throughout Poland, and is the largest world labor strike to date. The strike action, sometimes referred to as” the Polish Revolution,” is widely seen as the beginning of the end of communism.
