Take a trip to just about any store in town and you’ll be reminded that it’s that time of year again. No, not “back to school” time. We’re talking “It’s time to buy back-to-school supplies!” School supply lists can be long and the cost of required pens, folders, and art supplies really add up if you’re not careful. Consider these tips to save:
Review what you have at home. Items like scissors, rulers, and calculators should be just as good this year as they were last. Can you fnd any other items your children can re-use?
Shop around. Shopping at one store is convenient, but are you missing out on the best deals? Check the Sunday newspaper ads for specials – the money you save might be worth the extra stop or two.
Teach kids about spending. Back-to-school shopping can be a great teaching moment about money. Give the kids a calculator so they can keep track of costs as you shop. Tey might be surprised at how quickly things add up – and how smart choices can lead to big savings.
Shop the closet frst. When shopping for clothes, do a thorough “closet analysis” before you head out. What clothes still ft? What are must-haves vs. like-to-haves? Once you have a good list, hunt for deals such as sales, store coupons, and email ofers.
Credit or debit? Sale items help you save, but you may lose that savings if you buy with a credit card and don’t pay of your balance at the end of the month. You might be better of waiting an extra month to buy instead of accumulating interest debt.
Knowing how and where you spend your money is important for long-term fnancial health and building your savings. Focus on saving before you spend and you’ll be well on your way.
