West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes in Queens

First positive tests this year; wearing repellent can prevent infection For the first time this season, the Health Department has detected West Nile virus in New York City mosquitoes. No human cases have been reported in NYC this year, but people have been stricken in 19 states.

A pool of mosquitoes collected in the Flushing section of Queens has tested positive for the virus. The Health Department has increased mosquito surveillance and mosquito larvae control efforts in the affected area.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO TREAT MARSH AND OTHER NON-RESIDENTIAL AREAS OF STATEN ISLAND, QUEENS, AND BRONX WITH MOSQUITO LARVICIDE

Application to Take Place Thursday, August 2, Friday, August 3, and Monday, August 6, 2007 between the Hours of 6:00 A.M. and 9:00 P.M., Weather Permitting To control mosquitoes, the Health Department will apply larvicide by helicopter to marsh and other non-residential areas of Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx. Weather permitting, larvicide will be applied on Thursday, August 2, Friday, August 3, and Monday, August 6, 2007 from 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. each day. In case of bad weather, the Health Department will begin the morning of Friday, August 3 or the next possible day.
