Health department reaches out to doctors and community following an increase in legionnaires’ disease in the Parkchester area of the Bronx
Infection Is Highly Treatable If Diagnosed. Following an increase in cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the Parkchester area of the Bronx over the past year, the Health Department is asking doctors to test for the condition when examining patients with respiratory symptoms.
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious but treatable respiratory infection. Healthy people are not generally susceptible, but the illness can be fatal in older people and in those with lung disease or weakened immune systems. The Health Department is also advising certain area residents – those with weakened immune systems or chronic diseases – to see a doctor for testing if they develop a cough with fever and chills or experience difficulty breathing.
