THE BOOKS OF JACOB, Tokarczuk's pensive and mythic novel, first published in Poland in 2014, is now in the US, in English.
Set against a mid-18th century backdrop, the novel is about a charismatic self-proclaimed messiah. He is Jacob Frank, a young Jew who travels through the Hapsburg and Ottoman empires, both attracting and repelling crowds. Written by Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, a Nobel Prize winner, this book is described by The New York Times as "sophisticated and ribald and brimming with folk wit."
