Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in NY
January 03, 2017
The 26th Edition of the New York Jewish Film Festival (Jan 11-24, 2017) will include Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge, directed by Marie Noëlle.
This continues the Polish Cultural Institute New York's long-running participation in the NYJFF, which is presented by the Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge, a sweeping biographical film about Polish born Maria Curie-Sklodowska (Karolina Gruszka in the title role), a first woman to win the Nobel Prize, is as much an intimate portrayal of the struggles of the scientists private world as of her legendary public accomplishments, chronicling her battles against the male academic establishment, as well as her blissful marriage to her scientific partner, Pierre.
"Director Marie Noëlle conjures turn-of-the-century Europe with camerawork whose restless precision is an analogue of the brilliant scientist's mind. Split-screen compositions slide like shoji doors, and lyrical montages emphasize the momentousness of Marie's innovations. At the centre of all this activity is, of course, Marie herself. Gruszka's performance, alternately stoic and vulnerable, never lets us forget that this visionary woman was also very much a complicated and fascinating human being." - Jane Schoettle
