More Than 40% of Moms Admit to Pretending to Like Their Mother’s Day Gifts

08 maja, 2010

When researching Mother’s Day gifting trends, a recent survey(1) conducted by the Western Union Company (NYSE: WU), a leader in the money transfer segment of global payments, found that while sons and daughters of all ages have good intentions when it comes to finding the perfect gift, 42 percent find it hard to shop for mom.

Other notable survey findings include:

  • 73% of consumers are planning to give a Mother’s Day gift this year
  • 42% of moms admit to pretending to like past Mother’s Day gifts
  • 30% of moms thought last year’s gift was either “thoughtful, but not a gift they wanted,” or worse yet, they didn’t receive a gift at all!

If given the gift of money for Mother’s Day, many moms (44 percent) would prefer to spend it on something the whole family can enjoy together 34% would use the money to splurge on something for themselves. About half of consumers (48%) currently live more than an hour away from their mothers – which means many Mother’s Day gifts will be sent, rather than delivered personally.

Western Union provides a variety of fast, reliable ways for consumers to send the gift of cash around the corner, or around world, this Mother’s Day with more than 364,000 Western Union® Agent locations. For more information, visit www.westernunion.com.

(1) The survey, commissioned by Western Union and conducted by Wakefield Research, polled 1,000 people 18 years old and older between March 26 and March 28, 2010.
