…wonderful. The male-female duet was strong both in the treatment of the theme and the performances, particularly from Ryszard Kalinowski, whose intense, twisted movements were performed beautifully. – Vicki Costello, Dance Theatre Journal (Great Britain)
…a very delicate, almost lyrical story about a man and a woman who are both close and far away from each other; about their mutual deceptions, fascinations, and humiliations. It is about the artist and his real or imagined muse. – Grzegorz Jozefczuk, Gazeta Wyborcza – Lublin(Poland)
Liss Fain Dance hosts Lublin Dance Theatre in San Francisco, both as part of its home season concerts at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and of a series of international exchanges with choreographers whose work originates in different cultural and political environments.
Lublin Dance Theatre was established in 2001 as one of Poland’s first independent contemporary dance theaters. The troupe soon developed its own original style and attracted recognition throughoutPoland. Each performance is shaped in a process of exploration by an individual troupe member, who develops his or her own specific dramaturgy and aesthetic vision. In this way, the Theatre\'s repertory ranges widely in terms of style, technique, and philosophy.
The person and work of Bruno Schulz were the inspiration for this piece. Engrossed in the heady atmosphere of Schulz’s novels and drawings, choreographer Kalinowski explores the great Polish artist’s imaginative and mythic universe.
Lublin Dance Theatre dancer and choreographer Ryszard Kalinowski’s theatrical and highly physical approach to choreography impressed Liss Fain while her company performed and taught at the Contemporary Dance Forum in Lublin, Poland in 2007 and 2008, at the invitation of Lublin Dance Theatre. This collaboration between Liss Fain Dance, Ryszard Kalinowski, and Anna Zak, also of Lublin Dance Theatre, will expand awareness of contemporary Polish dance; and the pre-performance question-and-answer sessions will provide insight into the evolution of contemporary dance in Eastern Europe and the differences in training and outlook between American contemporary dancers and their counterparts there.
This program was made possible with additional support from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and The Zellerbach Family Foundation.
