Year of Grotowski closing events at the Lincoln Center
13 lipca, 2009
The Polish Cultural Institute in New York and The Performance Studies Department, Tisch School of the Arts, NYU present: TRACING GROTOWSKI’S PATH: YEAR OF GROTOWSKI IN NEW YORK.
Closing Events at NYU\'s Tisch School of the Arts and the Lincoln Center
On July 10, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts will host two panels:“PARATHEATRE AND THEATRE OF SOURCES” and “OBJECTIVE DRAMA.” These stages of Grotowski’s performance-based research in the 70s and 80s have been sparsely documented, in part because the work was less accessible to the public than that of the theatre of productions. The panels feature important contributors to Grotowski’s research, including those who traveled with him to conduct field research into the ritual traditions of diverse cultures, and those who held key leadership roles in his US-based research: Margaret Croyden, Magda Zlotowska, Jairo Cuesta,Massoud Saidpour, Holly Jolsinger, James Slowiak, and Téo Spychalski.Lisa Wolford Wylam will moderate both discussions.
On Grotowski and His Legacy. A three-day event at Lincoln Center, July 11-13, includes a two-part film program and a panel discussion.
We are proud to co-present with the Film Society of Lincoln Center ONGROTOWSKI AND HIS LEGACY: FILM DOCUMENTATION, July 11-12. Although it is impossible to capture on film the full experience of Grotowski’s work, audiences will have a chance to see films of his most famous theatre productions along with a rarely shown documentation from the “Art as vehicle” phase of his work. Also on view will be films and fragments of the recent performing arts research of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards. Each film will be introduced by an expert, including Paul Allain, Mario Biagini, Thomas Richards, Jill Godmilow and Lisa Wolford Wylam.
The final event of the Year of Grotowski in New York will also take place as part of the Lincoln Center Festival on July 13. The dicussion THOMAS RICHARDS AND MARIO BIAGINI: GROTOWSKI’S LEGACY AND THE WORKCENTER, moderated by Prof. Richard Schechner, will focus on the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera, Italy, and the potential of Grotowski’s performing arts legacy to continue to thrive today. Grotowski entrusted Thomas Richards and Mario Biagini with his Estate, including his entire body of written work, as its sole legatees.
UNESCO has designated 2009 as “The Year of Grotowski” – 50 years after the founding of the Polish Laboratory Theatre and 10 after the death of the world-renowned theatre director, master teacher, and, for many, spiritual leader. Considered one of the most important and influential theatre practitioners of the 20th century, JERZY GROTOWSKI revolutionized contemporary theatre.
The Tisch School panel is made possible through the generous support from the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Rutgers University-Newark.
On Grotowski and his Legacy: A three-day program at the Lincoln Center is presented in partnership with the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards and the Jerzy Grotowski Estate. The film program is curated by the Jerzy Grotowski Estate. These events are made possible in part through the generous support of the Italian Cultural Institute in New York.
