February 29 through March 2, New York City-based Above and Beyond Dance will present Seeking, its inaugural season of circus-infused dance.  This innovative performance melds modern dance and tango with stilt, acrobatic and aerial work, creating an exciting stage environment which utilizes both vertical and horizontal dimensions.  Dancers may appear upright, inverted, impossibly tall, or free of the constraints of the earth altogether, as they explore the human desire to meet and form relationships in the face of fear and isolation.

Seeking has been created collaboratively, through the efforts of several accomplished choreographic teams.  Individual pieces are artfully interwoven to form a unified work of dance theater which is at once dynamic spectacle yet sensitive and subtle.  Audience members will find a tango milonga exposing the dancers’ inner perspectives, and follow the performers’ struggle through a sea of disconnection toward the possibility of an accepting embrace.  The music encompasses a striking stylistic range, from traditional Argentine tango to Bob Sardo’s sparse piano scores, Béla Bartók’s Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano, Led Zeppelin and Randy Newman’s lush waltz theme from the 1981 movie Ragtime. 

Artistic Director Chriselle Tidrick structured this project to feature the diverse styles and talents of her company collaborators who collectively have presented work on four continents.  Members include Polish dancer, Pawel Cheda who has performed and choreographed both tango and modern dance work; the acclaimed stilt dancing duo, Friends in High Places; Martin Løfsnes, former principal dancer with the Martha Graham Company and current Artistic Director of 360° Dance; Tomomi Imai, whose dance work has been presented from New York to Tokyo; dancer/aerialist Emily Smyth Vartanian; Luis Gabriel Zaragoza, former dancer with the Martha Graham Ensemble and choreographer of over 60 works; and tango dancers/teachers Anabella Lenzu & Todd Carroll (of Anabella Lenzu/Dance Drama).

Ms. Tidrick founded Above and Beyond Dance to explore the untapped potential in the fusion of dance and circus arts.  She has been inspired by her experiences as a dancer, stilt dancer, acrobat and aerialist with a variety of companies including The Metropolitan Opera, Alice Farley Dance Theater, Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance, Catherine Gallant/DANCE, Pi Dance Theatre, and on film in Disney’s Enchanted.  Her choreography in these various idioms has been shown at The Zipper Theater, Streb, Galapagos, The Micro Museum, BRIC, The Belt Theater, and Skidmore College.  For additional information about Above and Beyond Dance, please visit:  www.AboveAndBeyondDance.com.

Kumble Theater is located in downtown Brooklyn at the corner of Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues (opposite Junior’s Restaurant) and is easily reached by subways 2, 3, 4, 5 to Nevins St. or B, M, Q, R to DeKalb Ave. (Willoughby St. exit).  The theater entrance is on Flatbush toward Willoughby Street.
