Manchester United vs Tottenham Preview: 10/28/17

27 października, 2017

The most anticipated matchup for this weekend in the Premier League would be the top of the table clash between Manchester United and Tottenham. Both teams have vastly different narratives coming into this matchup.

Manchester United, who was firing in all cylinders in the first several matchdays of the season, with Romelu Lukaku scoring a goal a game as his average; has now dropped five points out of six against Liverpool and Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Tottenham had some home scares (due to playing at Wembley) early on, while now they and Harry Kane are in full form after a slow start in August.

Besides the match itself, the form of Manchester City looms large over both teams. As they are closest to the leaders points wise (both at 5 points off), whoever wins this match will at least stay at pace with arguably the most in form side in Europe at this point. Therefore, it would not help Manchester United much if Mourinho’s men play for a draw against Tottenham. It would still be only one point against City, who would be playing against West Bromich Albion on the same matchday. Tottenham would most likely continue carrying on their form from their massive 4-1 win against Liverpool, and would be rightfully confident in going toe-to-toe with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Of course, there are some injury concerns. There is possibility that Harry Kane will miss the match, after apparently picking up a slight injury towards the end of the Liverpool game. Meanwhile for United, they are very much in an injury crisis. The likes of Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick, and Zlatan Ibrahomivic missing due to injury has left the spine of the first eleven severely weakened. As a result, the foundation of Manchester United will be strongly challenged by a strong Tottenham side.

Overall, Tottenham can be counted as slight favorites here. Their level of performances coupled with United’s poor form and injuries means that the London side will have advantage in terms of quality on the pitch. However, it being Old Trafford and Jose Mourinho at the helm, United do have a chance in frustrating the high flying Spurs with a disciplined and efficient approach.
