Poland qualifies for Russia 2018 after 4-2 win against Montenegro
10 października, 2017
Poland qualifies for their first World Cup since 2006 after an impressive 4-2 home win against Montenegro in Group E. Robert Lewandowski was on target once again, and ultimately ending his incredibly impressive goal scoring with a final 16 goals in the qualifiers. Poland themselves were impressive as well, finishing the qualifiers with eight wins, one draw, and one loss against the runner’s up Denmark.
As for the match against Montenegro itself, Poland pulled an early lead, as Kamil Grosicki and Krzysztof Maczynski scored within 20 minutes in the first half. Poland maintained the score line until the second half. There was indeed a brief scare towards the end of the match, as Montenegro were able to score two themselves and create a 2-2 score line at the 83rd minute. However, Lewandowski again showed up to save Poland’s blushes, as he forced a turnover deep into Montenegro’s half before rounding the goalkeeper and securing the win. Montenegro then suffered from an own goal several minutes later for a final 4-2 score.
Poland have certainly grown to be a consistent force in Europe. Lewandowski may be at the helm of the team, but players like Milik (unfortunately injured), Zielinski, Glik, and Krychowiak have all shown to be strong players for both club and country. Poland will be seeded because of being a consistent force, especially considering they are ranked in the top ten in FIFA’s official ranking. This will more likely than result in a more manageable group for the Poles in next year's highly anticipated World Cup in Russia.
