Victory for Polish Tennis Player Łukasz Kubot and Brazilian Marcelo Meloin in Wimbledon

17 lipca, 2017

After a gruelling 4 hour 39 minute match, Łukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo achieved their first Wimbledon title.

On Saturday, 15 July, the doubles team of Łukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil went up against Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic in the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Doubles Final. The two teams were a close match, with neither side relenting up until the very end. The match, lasting a total of 4 hours 39 minutes, went on for so long that the Centre Court roof had to be closed and the floodlights turned on for the first time this year. After a ten-minute break to close the roof, Kubot and Melo returned to Centre Court and broke Marach and Pavic right away, securing victory with a final score of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(2), 3-6, 13-11. Kubot celebrated the team’s victory with his signature can-can dance.

Łukasz Kubot, born in Bolesławiec, Poland, is an acclaimed Polish tennis player, with a colourful career both in doubles and singles. Kubot is currently ranked number four in the world for men’s doubles. He has been playing tennis since he was nine years old, turning professional in 2002. On Saturday Kubot became the first Pole to hold two Grand Slam titles. Previously in 2014 Kubot won the Australian Open Men’s Doubles title alongside Robert Lindstedt. He currently lives in Lubin, Poland.

The road to the final was not easy either. Kubot and Melo played three five-set matches building up to Saturday, including a semifinal match against the top seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers.

While this was the first Grand Slam win for the Polish-Brazilian pair, it is the fifth title of what has already been a successful year for the team. Earlier in 2017, Kubot and Melo came in first place on grass at the Halle Open and the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships, on clay at the Madrid Open, and on hard court at the Miami Open.
