Poland beat Switzerland on Penalties to progress further in Euro 2016

25 czerwca, 2016

Switzerland 1-1 Poland. Adam Nawalka’s men had to wait until penalties to confirm the first spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament in France. Poland struck in the first half through a Jakub Blaszczykowski goal, making him the first Polish player to score twice in a single Euro. Overall, Poland were the much better side in the first half of proceedings.

However, the Swiss grew into the match, dominating possession and chances. Late in the second half, Xierdan Shaqiri scored the goal of the tournament through a bicycle kick to put Poland on the back foot for the rest of regulation time.

Poland had to further withstand the Swiss resurgence, with goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski making save after save to keep Nawalka’s man in the match.

Eventually the tie went to penalties, with Poland successfully scoring all five penalties against Switzerland’s four to confirm their passage in the quarterfinals for the first time in the country’s history.

They will now look to play either Croatia or Portugal on Thursday.
