Milik seals First Ever Poland Euro Win Over Northern Ireland
Michael Skok 12 czerwca, 2016
Poland jumpstarted their Euro 2016 campaign with a relatively comfortable win over Northern Ireland thanks to a second-half strike by Arkadiusz Milik. Not only did Poland secure the three points, but managed a win on the opening day of a major tournament since 1974. Also, this was Poland’s first competitive win in the Euros itself.
Northern Ireland set to frustrate the Red and Whites through a defensive organization that saw them have an eleven unbeaten streak up to the tournament itself. For 51 minutes, the Polish side mostly relied on crosses to unnerve the Irish defense, supplied by the likes of Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek. The crosses failed to penetrate the opposition’s box however, and it was the former who found space on the right side for Milik on the second half. Poland were able to see off for the rest of the game with a calm, if not unspectacular assurance over the ball and possession.
Poland now has to look towards Germany, who are undoubtedly favorites to win the whole competition. Adam Nawalka’s man will certainly need to improve their play to get a result from the current world champions.
