One of Germany’s brightest prodigies in Mario Gotze moved from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich following the latter’s treble in 2012/2013 season. Since then, he never was able to truly stamp his mark on the Bavarian club. Marred by injuries, indifferent form, and simply not fitting into Guardiola’s XI ideally; Gotze was very much a peripheral figure for most of his time at the club. There was hope that he would revitalize his form following his famous goal against Argentina in the World Cup final, but overall his issues persisted. There were times where he played brilliantly, but ultimately those times paled in comparison to the likes of how Robert Lewandowski carried on (another former Dortmund player).
There is hope that with Ancelotti coming in that the German playmaker would revitalize his career, however with the last year on his original contract coming up; there is a huge question mark on whether or not it would make more sense to sell the player this upcoming transfer season. The club has already extended contracts for the likes of Thiago, Boateng, Muller, and Alaba; but have yet to make any noise for a potential extension for Gotze. As one of Bayern’s higher earners as well, there is little reason as to why the Bavarians’ astute board would consider providing an extension where a pay raise is traditionally given. There is also no guarantee that Gotze will become a regular in an already stacked Bayern XI that has been performing extremely well without him.
Considering this, there are two clubs that would fit for Mario Gotze that have been making the latest rounds throughout the news. Liverpool and Dortmund each have their own appeal for Mario. Liverpool has Jurgen Klopp, where many consider to be the manager that would get the most out of Mario Gotze. He developed him from a young promising talent to one of the most exciting German prospects in years. Gotze would be able to flourish again under Klopp, since he is employing the same system that he used at Dortmund. Liverpool also has the finances to pull Gotze from Bayern, promising higher wages while clearly offering a key place in the starting XI; it’s highly probable Mario could become Liverpool’s star player. The only problem would be that Liverpool would be a step back for Gotze in terms of playing at the highest level. Still, Champions League or not, the playmaker can put his stamp on the Premier League come next season.
Meanwhile for Dortmund, Mario would be returning to his old home. He would link up once again with his partner in crime, Marco Reus. Even though Tuchel employs a slightly different system to what Klopp had, he clearly can have a place in the team playing behind Pierre-Emrick Aubamayeng. Feeding balls for Reus and Aubamayeng would even make Dortmund more potent than they currently are. He would also still be playing at the highest level, and can help Dortmund push Bayern in the league more consistently. There are two key issues here however; Gotze would certainly have to take a pay cut, while also having to deal with a possible fan revolt - since he left the club he made his name at under bitter circumstances.
In any case, there is little reason to believe for Mario Gotze to stay at Bayern Munich for one more season; he doesn’t add anything to squad besides depth, and his performances do not warrant an extension (with a pay raise) for Bayern’s management. Whether he moves on to Dortmund, Liverpool, or another Premier League club; a new chapter for the young German looks to be in order.
