The Most Likely Candidates for Ballon D’Or from Bayern Munich
Michael Skok 29 września, 2015
Whenever the words “golden boot” are mentioned, there are always two names associated with the award. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have become two of Europe’s most prestigious football players. The two rivals have dominated the award as of late, and only two players from Bayern Munich have been named in the final three alongside the two. Franck Ribery was one of the possible recipients after his performances for Bayern Munich in the treble winning 2012-2013 season, while Manuel Neuer was the most recent Munich player nominated for his performances in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for Germany. Yet again, there are plenty of nominees that can be part of the final three when the award is given next year.
Thomas Mueller
Mueller is perhaps one of the most consistent players for Bayern Munich. The 25 year old German international can play in any position across the front four on the pitch – behind the striker, left wing, right wing, or even a false 9 himself. What’s more impressive is that he is still as effective regardless of the position change. He has essentially become Bayern Munich’s talisman (especially after the departure of Bastian Schweinsteiger). Mueller has already bagged himself six goals and one assist in the Bundesliga, while having scored two goals after only one game in the Champions League. If Mueller can continue his record in both competitions, as well as score in the big occasions – he will have a strong case to be part of the final three come January.
Robert Lewandowski
Lewandowski has exploded into form after a decent start to his second season at Bayern. The five goals against Wolfsburg will certainly be one of the highlights of his career, being the quickest player in Bundesliga history to do so. He followed that performance up with another two goals against Mainz. Lewandowski has often been criticized with his finishing ability; these two recent games seem to suggest that he may have become more clinical for the upcoming season. With Diego Costa’s service, and the combination of Thomas Mueller’s player, Lewandowski can set quite a few records at Bayern. If he combines that with stellar performances with the Polish national team to finish off the Euro qualifiers, Lewandowski can truly set himself apart from his peers in the striking department.
Manuel Neuer
Of course, Neuer can do a repeat from last season. Still undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the world, Germany and Bayern Munich’s shotstopper can find himself in contention once again for the Ballon D’Or. This will be slightly tougher for the former Schalke man however, not having the World Cup to highlight his performances as he did in the prior season. Still, if he continues to be stellar for Bayern Munich (as he has already been this season), there might just be a chance for the goalkeeper once again to be part of the final contestants.
