Wolfsburg Should Keep Kevin De Bruyne at all Costs
Michael Skok 12 sierpnia, 2015
There are some teams that more often than not rely on one player to carry them to success. Wolfsburg is one of those teams. Having had quite a successful season; finishing 2nd place to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, as well as winning the domestic DFB Pokal cup in Germany; the club will look to sustain their relevance at the highest level in German football. Not one player is more key to that goal than the Belgian playmaker.
Despite Manchester City reportedly approaching the German club with a hefty offer, there simply are no positives for the club to sell now, rather than a year on. For one thing, the 24 year old astonishingly had 10 goals and 20 assists during the 2014-2015 season, elevating him to the Bundesliga player of the year. He even had 5 goals and 5 assists in 11 appearances in the Europa league, another respectable showing. This is the type of form that only the elite players can display year in, year out; and Wolfsburg potentially have one in the making.
Kevin De Bruyne is the key to keeping Wolfsburg relevant in the race to top four within the Bundesliga. No other players come close to his stats within the squad, and players like Bas Dost (the striker himself had a relatively fantastic season – scoring 16 goals in domestic competition), relied heavily on De Bruyne’s play to shine and score goals.
Even if Wolfsburg were to sell De Bruyne for a hefty fee, there is no one realistic on the market that can potentially replace the service the playmaker already provides. And even if there was, the club would certainly have to pay over the odds to acquire their services, let alone having a hard time persuading the player of the club’s ambitions when it is already willing to let go of their best player. Refusing to sell to another club, whether it to be Manchester City or otherwise would give Wolfsburg another year to scout for a player or players that replace De Bruyne’s services. Clubs like Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach will be looking to consolidate their top four finishes from last season while Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund will certainly try their utmost to return to CL football this coming season. Bayern Munich is set to finish yet again at least in the top four. Keeping the 24 year old for another year would also boost their chances for fortifying their position at the top of the table (providing of course they repeat the performances from last season).
Wolfsburg is at a crossroads, and despite the rumored offers for their talisman being enticing; it would almost certainly be a major blow for the club’s ambitions in the long term.
