The 2014 Volleyball Men\'s World Championship. Poland waits for Russian volleyball fans and tourists
16 maja, 2014
The Polish Embassy in Moscow organised a meeting of Russian volleyball players, diplomats, sports commentators and tourist organisations. The event was held under the name “100 days before the 2014 Volleyball Men\'s World Championship, Poland waits for Russian volleyball fans and tourists.” It is accompanied by an exhibition presenting the history of Polish and Russian volleyball, organised to announce the first volleyball competition of this rank to take place in Poland.
The issue of Polish visas to volleyball fans and tourists from Russia who will participate in the championship between 30 August and 21 September was among the main topics discussed at the meeting. Members of the Polish Volleyball Federation talked about preparations for the World Championship in six host cities: Bydgoszcz, Gdansk, Katowice, Krakow, Lodz and Wroclaw. The Polish Tourism Organisation has presented an offer of group tours to Poland during that time.
The meeting organised by Polish diplomats was attended by outstanding Russian volleyball players: the 1980 Olympic Games gold medal winners Yuriy Panchenko and Vladimir Kondra, and current Russian representatives and winners of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The guests were also present at the inauguration of the exhibition titled “The History of Polish and Russian Volleyball.”
The exhibition presents items from the collections of the Museums of Sports in Warsaw and Moscow, such as a ball signed by members of the Polish representation who won the 1974 World Championship in Mexico, the gold medal of the 1965 Men’s World Cup or the statue of a female volleyball player, given to Poles by the Soviet team on the occasion of the 1950 World Championship in Sofia. The exhibition documents successes of Polish volleyball teams, starting from the very beginnings dating back to the interwar period, through our biggest achievements of the 1970s and 1980s, and ending with the latest successes: silver medal won at the 2006 World Championship in Tokyo or the victory in the 2012 Champions League.
Poland has a chance of winning the Volleyball World Championship in autumn. Its success would recall the great victories of the famous Hubert Wagner’s team 40 years ago, especially the gold medal won at the 1974 World Championship in Mexico.
