Dagmara Woźniak, born in Wrocław, Poland will be fencing for Team USA in the 2012 London Olympics. (Avenel, New Jersey)
The recent St. John’s University graduate was a four time women’s NCAA All-America in saber. Wozniak immigrated with her parents to the United States from Poland when she was one year old. Wozniak, who is now 24, began fencing at age 9.
Wozniak’s biggest fencing accomplishment so far has been to help Team USA win a bronze medal at the 2011 World Fencing Championships in Catania, Italy. Because women’s saber is no longer a team Olympic event, each nation can qualify a maximum of two women’s saber athletes. During the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Wozniak served as the alternate for the three-member U.S. women’s saber squad.
She posted a 78-16 record in her last varsity season (2011) at St. John’s. The U.S. Fencing Team was selected in April at the USA Fencing National Championships. The women’s saber finals will be August 1, in London.
