Yankees set club record with 12-run 1st inning

31 lipca, 2011

The New York Yankees set a club record for runs in the first inning, exploding for 12 runs in the opening frame against Baltimore in the second game of a doubleheader.

Nick Swisher on Saturday homered and drove in three. Robinson Cano had a brace of RBI singles and the Yankees sent 16 batters to the plate as they kept their half of the inning alive for 40 minutes.

The Yankees had 10 hits as they notched their biggest offensive inning since a 13-run eighth inning on June 21, 2005, against Tampa Bay.

Derek Jeter\'s two-run single in his second at-bat chased Orioles starting pitcher Zach Britton. Britton had been recalled from the minor leagues before the game but got just one out, throwing a called third strike past Jeter to start the inning.

Mark Teixeira hit a two-run double off reliever Jason Berken, and Swisher added a two-run homer to cap the scoring.

Berken issued a walk to Andruw Jones before Russell Martin grounded into a force play on the 70th pitch of the inning to finally bring Baltimore up to bat.

The Yankees went on to win 17-3.
