Last US World War I veteran dies at 110

28 lutego, 2011

The last US World War I veteran, who lied about his age to get into the military and be able to fight, has died at the age of 110, CNN television reported.

The network quoted a spokesman for the family of Frank Buckles as saying he had died peacefully in his home near Charles Town, West Virginia, of natural causes early Sunday.

Buckles celebrated his 110th birthday on February 1, but his family said his health had been failing since late last year.

Buckles served as a US Army ambulance driver in Europe during World War I and rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended, CNN said.

After World War I ended, he worked for the merchant marine.

During World War II, he was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines and held prisoner of war for more than three years before he was freed by US troops.
