Senator and Secretary of Defence, a recipient of two Purple Hearts while an infantry squad leader in the Vietnam War; former professor at Georgetown University, chairman of the Atlantic Council and co-chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board. Senator Hagel, who is of Polish origins, has been a vocal proponent of US partnership with Poland and recognized Poland's many contributions to NATO and American efforts.

Founded in 1925, the Kosciuszko Foundation promotes closer ties between Poland and the United States through educational, scientific and cultural exchanges. It awards up to $1 million annually in fellowships and grants to graduate students, scholars, scientists, professionals, and artists, and promotes Polish culture in America. The Foundation has awarded scholarships and provided a forum to Poles who have changed history.
