Arthur Mitchell, the first African-American principal dancer in a major ballet company, founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969 in response to the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. In so doing, Mitchell created the first classical ballet school for the children of Harlem, a poor and predominantly black New York neighborhood where Mitchel himself was raised.
Since its inception, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural institution that continues to set standards in the performing arts worldwide. The Dance Theatre of Harlem has achieved unprecedented success, bringing innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression to audiences across the United States and around the world.
