Improvement Project: in mid-April 2014, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will begin the second phase of a roadway improvement project to rehabilitate the westbound (to New Jersey) Lincoln Tunnel Route 495 roadway approach known as the “Helix.”
The first phase of this project, completed in 2013, involved rehabilitation of the eastbound Helix.
Construction work will take place during overnight hours noted below:
- Sunday through Thursday, 11PM to 5AM the following morning
- Friday, 11:59PM to 8AM Saturday morning
- Sunday morning, 1AM to 9AM
A traffic detour plan has been developed to allow the Lincoln Tunnel to remain open to customers during construction, while minimizing delays and inconvenience. Westbound traffic will be detoured to eastbound Helix lanes and eastbound Helix traffic will exit at the Pleasant Avenue off ramp and use local street access to the tunnel via JFK Boulevard East. The eastbound detour will begin one hour prior to the westbound closing on weeknights, and a half hour prior on weekends.

Customers planning to use the westbound Helix to New Jersey during construction hours may wish to seek alternate routes to avoid delays, and consider mass transit options such as PATH and NJ TRANSIT Bus and Rail.
Construction will be suspended on certain major holidays. Check our website http://www.panynj.gov/alerts for the most up-to-date closure information.
