Over the last 50 years, the average tax rate paid by the very highest-income Americans has been cut nearly in half. In fact, in 2009, 1,470 people who made more than $1 million paid nothing in federal income taxes at all. Thousands of the wealthiest individuals in the United States are paying a lower tax rate than middle class families.
And that\'s not fair.
Warren Buffett knows it. Last year, the billionaire sat down and calculated the tax rates of the 20 people in his office. When he did, he realized that he pays a lower rate than his secretary -- and everyone else he works with. Buffett wants this situation to change, and that\'s why the reform that President Obama has proposed to fix this problem is called the Buffett Rule.
It\'s a basic principle of fairness: In America, everyone ought to have the same opportunities for success. And it\'s important that the American people understand that.
So we want you to learn your Buffett number.
Find out how many millionaires pay a lower effective tax rate than you, then share those results.
