US stocks registered their biggest losses of the year Tuesday amid worries about a looming Greek debt swap and slowing growth in the global economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 204.57 points (1.58 percent) to 12,758.24 in closing trade.
The broad-based S&P 500 shed 20.94 points (1.53 percent) to 1,343.3.
The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite slid 169.91 points (2.10 percent) to 7,921.36.
The main indexes closed in the red for the third straight day amid high volatility. The VIX, or so-called "fear" index, shot up 17 percent.
