European Union leaders appointed Italy\'s Mario Draghi to be the next president of the European Central Bank, officials said on Friday at a summit focused on the eurozone debt crisis.
"The European Council has just agreed on the appointment of Mario Draghi" to succeed France\'s Jean-Claude Trichet as of November 1, EU president Herman Van Rompuy said on Twitter.
The appointment comes a day later than expected after France wanted another Italian on the ECB executive to make way for a Frenchman.
