The cost of a barrel of Brent North Sea crude for delivery in April reached $119.79 on Thursday because of troubles in the Middle East and North Africa before falling back again.
Brent oil struck $110 per barrel on Wednesday for the first time since early September 2008, driven by fears about the impact of Libyan violence on global energy supplies.
