German politicians distort changes taking place in Poland
MSZ 11 stycznia, 2016
The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Warsaw, Rolf Nikel, was invited to the MFA by the chief of Polish diplomacy following anti-Polish comments by German politicians.
“We have met and talked about how to solve communication problems between Poland and Germany,” Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said after Monday’s meeting with German Ambassador Rolf Nikel.
During the talks, Minister Witold Waszczykowski referred in particular to statements by German politicians which distort changes taking place in Poland at the moment. The interlocutors agreed that this year, which marks 25 years of the Treaty of Good Neighbourhood and Friendly Cooperation, will make it possible to draw conclusions and identify those areas of Polish-German relations which need improvement.
Minister Waszczykowski also emphasized that issues of importance for Poland and Germany should be directly discussed between both countries’ governments, rather than through media declarations made by politicians. In this context, the minister recalled the invitation he extended to Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to visit Poland in the near future. The visit will be an opportunity to discuss bilateral issues, and important European matters.
“Visits by German politicians to Poland would be the best solution. They would be able to see for themselves that democracy in Poland is safe and sound,” Minister Waszczykowski stressed after the meeting with Ambassador Nikel. Poland’s top diplomat emphasized that Polish-German relations are not strained. “Relations with Poland are a treasure that must be guarded,” said Ambassador Nikel.
