EU Foreign Affairs Council calls Ukrainian authorities to repeal controversial laws
21 stycznia, 2014
Latest developments in Africa and the Middle East, and relations with Russia and Ukraine were among the topics discussed by EU foreign ministers at the monthly FAC meeting, which took place in Brussels last Monday.
EU chiefs of diplomacy decided to start fast-track preparations for EU military mission to the Central African Republic. “Poland took the decision to support our French partners’ mission already some time ago,” stressed Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in Brussels. The mission, consisting of 500-1,000 soldiers, is expected to last four to six months and help stabilise the CAR capital city, Bangui. Latest developments in South Sudan were also on the meeting’s agenda.
Moreover, EU foreign ministers decided to ease sanctions against Iran under the agreement to stop the country’s nuclear programme. Also discussed were the current situation in Syria and preparations for the Geneva 2 Peace Conference, and the EU-Russia summit (during the lunch, the latter topic was also analysed in the wider EaP context).
Finally, conclusions on the latest developments in Ukraine were adopted. The ministers expressed their “deep concern” over the laws enacted by the Supreme Council, which significantly limit fundamental civil rights in Ukraine. They called on Kyiv to repeal the adopted legislation. “We are concerned that Ukraine is surprisingly quickly becoming similar to certain Eastern European countries,” Minister Sikorski underscored. The EU Council also appealed to all sides of the conflict to seek peaceful and democratic ways of solving the current political crisis.
On the sidelines of the FAC meeting, Minister Sikorski met with the international club of female correspondents “Brux-elles.” The talks focused on international and European affairs, as well as the situation of and facilitations for women at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Poland’s diplomacy, both at the headquarters and in diplomatic missions abroad, employs more women than men,” stressed the minister.
