On March 23rd, 2018, the National Security Agency detained Marek W., a public official employed in one of ministries in charge of economic affairs. Marek W. is suspected of collaborating with secret services of the Russian Federation
The man was charged with committing a crime defined in Article 130 of the Criminal Code, namely taking part in the activities of a foreign intelligence service against the Republic of Poland. On March 24th, the court acceded to the prosecutor’s request to arrest Marek W. for three months.
The evidence gathered by the National Security Agency shows that Marek W. maintained contacts with officers of Russian secret services and provided them with information on investments of crucial importance for the interest of Poland.
Within his task and responsibilities as a public official, Marek W. dealt with strategic projects for the Polish energy infrastructure and acquired EU funding for energy diversification program aimed at reducing the dependence on Russian gas.
The evidence also shows that Marek W. informed the officers of Russian special services about Polish government’s action plan on the construction of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
