Third Round of Polish-US Strategic Dialogue for Democracy

The Polish delegation was headed by MFA Undersecretary of State Jerzy Pomianowski. The Deputy Minister underscored the role and outcomes of Polish-US cooperation, one of which is the creation of an Information Centre for Local Authorities in Moldova, organized in collaboration with Moldova’s Ministry of Regional Development. “Our strategic dialogue builds Polish-US relations and produces tangible results with respect to Poland’s most important partners  – in its immediate neighbourhood – as well those that are  more distant but have to deal with problems of democratic transformation,” said Deputy Minister Pomianowski.

Tomicah Tillemann Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies at U.S. Department of State noted that Poland is the only country in the world with which the United States has a strategic partnership for the development of democracy. “Poland has assumed the role of a regional leader in promoting democracy, sharing with other countries its experiences of over 20 years of systemic transformation,” said Tillemann.

The Polish-US Strategic Dialogue for Democracy was initiated by Minister Radosław Sikorski and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during their meeting on 3 March 2011. The first two rounds of meetings were held on 22 March 2011 in Warsaw and 8 May 2012 in Washington. Polish-US cooperation for the promotion of democracy began in 2000 and is being implemented in the framework of the Community of Democracies.

The day before, Deputy Minister Jerzy Pomianowski met with Moldova’s Deputy Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman to discuss the existing activities of the Moldova Task Force (MTF) working groups. There are five working groups in the MTF tasked with over 100 projects. The initiative aims at aligning Moldova’s administration and economy with Western standards.
