Dr Nasiek's Seminar: Importance of Evaluating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS)

Dariusz J. Nasiek, MD - Accident Related Therapy & Pain Management
On Thursday June 9th 2021, Allied Neurology and Interventional Pain Practice held another great medico-legal seminar.
Dr. Dariusz Nasiek, Pain Management Specialist, and Dr. Ravi Tikoo MD, Board Certified Neurologist, invited a group of doctors, lawyers, chiropractors, and medical technology industry representatives to discuss the importance of evaluating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS), a topic so important that it was decided to repeat and expand presentations from past.
After thanking the staff, sponsers, and all others involved, Dr. Nasiek presented on the silent TBI epidemic, which presents over 1.4 million cases per year in the US – a number that Dr. Tikoo stated was actually an excess of 3 million per year, a discrepancy based on the difficulty of diagnosis. With 56% of mild TBI cases going undiagnosed in ER departments throughout the US, many experience the serious consequences and injury permanency of TBI including an increase in dementia and Parkinson disease and a life span decrease of 2 years. Thankfully, EEG and Tele EEG are now able to be used to diagnose TBI.
This diagnosis helps both with the issues faced in diagnosing and proving TBI. This aid helps hinder the possible formation of scar tissue in the brain and other serious pathologies. While the gold standard of detection has usually been a brain biopsy – an invasive and overwhelming procedure, EEG is both more accessible and more widely used. Additionally, new Tele EEG technology has been developed and can be performed over a prolonged period of more than 3 days, making it the most sensitive tool so far to prove focal seizure activity resulting from TBI. Although medical benefits regarding any brain and spinal cord injury in the state on NJ remain at the level of $250k, even a $15k policy will allow for such diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in the treatment of such injuries.
As the presentation went on, the food and conversation was just as great as usual, with knowledge and comradery being shared.
The next meeting is expected to be held on June 15th, from 7-9 PM at the same place. We are extending an invitation to all our friends, contributors, and professional family to participate in our future events.
